Congrats to Xiao-Hua for winning the ISBM Dempster Rising Star Award!
Xiao-Hua has been awarded the 2026 Dempster Rising Star Award for Excellence in Bone Metabolism Research from the ISBM for his team's abstract ''Image-Guided 3D Microprinting of Osteocyte Networks'' by Margherita Bernero, Megi Ishmaku, Wanwan Qiu, Xianjun Yang, Ralph Müller, and Xiao‑Hua Qin. He will be presenting the group’s work at the XVIIth Congress of the International Society of Bone Morphometry (ISBM 2026).
The DesignBONE team presented their work at the Focus Project Roll-Out Event
This year we hosted the DesignBONE Focus Project. Over the course of two semesters, the interdisciplinary team (6 students from D-HEST and D-MAVT) worked together and finally presented their vision of a 3D-printed bone implant at the Focus Project Roll-Out event organized by D-MAVT on 27th May 2026.
Xiao-Hua gave an invited lecture at the EPFL Mechanics Day 2026
Every year, the EDME (Doctoral School in Mechanics) at EPFL organizes the Mechanics Day featuring one of their research domains. For this year’s event with a focus on biomechanics, they invited Xiao-Hua as a guest speaker and organized interesting lab visits.
Read the BBC Future article on AI for bone implants featuring Xiao-Hua
Xiao-Hua was interviewed by BBC Future about converging AI and biomaterials for future bone implants. He sees great potential in using soft hydrogel metamaterials for bone implants to better support the body’s natural bone healing process.
Congrats to Doris for successfully defending her PhD!
During her PhD thesis, Doris Zauchner developed an OI-on-chip model, combining a permissive, microporous PEG hydrogel with patient-derived cells on a microfluidic perfusion chip and thereby establishing a new in vitro platform to study this rare disease. We congratulate her warmly and wish Doris all the best for her next adventures!
